Services pour les enfants

Children of Ireland dependents of their parents and have the same right to health services, as their parents. This means that if your parents are medical card, are included as a dependent on the card, and entitled to the same range of services, as your parents. 

At the same time, a range of services specifically for children, and some services are provided free of charge to children, even if their parents do not have medical cards. These services are usually provided as a maternity and child welfare services, health care services to preschool children and school health services. Children are also entitled to the vaccination and immunization services for free. 

Children's Hospital 

Children can be treated in public or private hospital on the same basis as adults. There are a number of specialized children's hospital. Entitlement to hospital services is the same in these hospitals as public and voluntary hospitals generally. These hospitals provide inpatient services, outpatient services, day care, accident and emergency services and specialized services for children. 

If children are admitted to hospital for treatment of defects discovered at the school and children's health research, it does not have to pay the normal costs of public hospital patients. 

There is no one age, a child ceases to be a child, to health care services, but 16 is a more conventional cut-off point. 

Medical Card and young people in more than 16 

If you are older than 16 years and is a student, or is financially dependent on your parents, you are entitled to a medical card services, if they must have a medical card. This means that you will be included in your medical card, if you live in the house and you will receive your card if you live far away from home. On the medical card means test, is a benefit for children over the age of 16. This allowance is doubled if the child is a third-level education and are not eligible for a grant. This measure applies to young people under 25 years of age. 

Recipients of Disability Allowance 

People who receive disability benefits to receive a medical card in their own right. Young people can claim this allowance from the age of 16. 

Encourage children 

Children who are encouraged to have personal medical card. This is the case, regardless of benefits to encourage their parents. 

Prescribed Drugs and Medicines 

Children may be considered as dependents under the age of 18 (or 23 if full time students) to determine the drugs and medicines largest family expenses. 

Children of any age who are mentally or physically disabled to such an extent that it is practically impossible to keep them fully, and who live at home, may also be considered as dependents for the set of drugs and medicines in accordance with the procedure. 

Private health insurance 

Children may be charged a reduced contribution to their parents' private health insurance of up to 18 years (or 21 if all of the education). 

Consent to treatment 

Generally, children over 16 years of age, may have to give consent to surgical procedures. This is practically obtain parental consent for medical procedures in children by age, although it is not entirely clear that parents must take a final decision. In a recent court case, the Supreme Court ruled that only in exceptional circumstances, the court proceedings to make an order that was contrary to the decision of the parents on the procedures for their children.
