Trains
Iarnod Eireann (Irish Rail) is Ireland's national rail company, while in the north, Northern Ireland Railway is the rail company. Irish rail manages the national train transport as well as Dublin's local rail transport like DART and LUAS. It is not very extensive as it serves only the major cities, so if you would like to reach remote areas, you may have to use local bus services.
Trains are usually comfortable and punctual. Remember that friday night trains from Dublin to other cities are usually very busy due to many workers and students returning home. Equally, sunday trains to Dublin are very busy.
In Dublin, the electric train system called DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) is a fast way to travel around the city serving the coastline from Howth, in the North County Dublin , to Bray, in the south of Dublin, in County Wicklow. DART does not serve west Dublin which is served by Commuter trains.
The LUAS is a light rail system serving Dublin city and has two lines, Red and Green.
You can buy a Dublin Explorer ticket in any DART station, this ticket allows you to travel around the city on DART and buses for four days.
In Cork there is an Eastern commuter line serving Fota and Cobh.
